Opong-Fosu best understands grassroots struggles – NDC Grassroots Voices

Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Board Chairman Akwasi Opong-Fosu best understands the struggles of grassroots party members, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Grassroots Voices has declared.
The pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) group made the assertion while endorsing the veteran politician for the party’s National Chairman position, describing him as the candidate with the strongest connection to the party’s base.
In a statement, the group said Opong-Fosu’s extensive experience in local governance and community-level administration gives him a unique appreciation of the challenges facing ordinary party activists.
Explaining its endorsement, the group said, “We are rooting for him because Hon Akwasi Opong-Fosu uniquely appreciates the distinct dynamics at the base.”
It added that his long career in public service has given him first-hand knowledge of grassroots politics.
“He lived and breathed grassroots governance having served as PNDC District Secretary/DCE, President of the National Association of Local Authorities in Ghana (NALAG), Head of Local Government Service, Member of Parliament, and Minister of Local Government and Rural Development,” the statement said.
According to the group, Opong-Fosu’s nearly two decades of service in local government administration distinguish him from other potential contenders.
“Dedicating almost two decades of his political life at the local level in local government administration and grassroots empowerment places him in a unique position to understand the pain, the aspirations, and the daily struggles of the local party worker,” it stated.
The group further described Opong-Fosu as the ideal link between the party’s leadership and its rank-and-file supporters.
“Without doubt, Hon Akwasi Opong-Fosu represents the bridge between party leadership and the grassroots. His vision promises an NDC where loyalty is respected, hard work is rewarded, and every activist has a stake in our collective success,” the statement added.
NDC Grassroots Voices said it understands Opong-Fosu is consulting widely before formally declaring his intention to contest the National Chairman position. It pledged to embark on a nationwide campaign on his behalf once he officially announces his candidature.
Opong-Fosu, who currently serves as Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), is a veteran member of the NDC with more than 40 years of service in local and national governance.
He has held several leadership positions in local government, Parliament and Cabinet, which the group believes make him best placed to champion the interests of grassroots members.
