Justice Yaw Oppong bows out as Director of Legal Education

Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, Director of Legal Education and head of the Ghana School of Law, will step down from his position at the end of August 2025. This follows a directive from the Judiciary recalling him to full service at the Court of Appeal.
A letter dated August 8, 2025, signed by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, confirmed that his secondment to the General Legal Council will end on September 1, 2025.
“The Judiciary now requires your full services, so you are recalled from the position of Director of Legal Education with effect from 1st September 2025,” the letter stated.
Justice Oppong has been directed to hand over to Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, who has been appointed Acting Director of Legal Education while a search is conducted for a substantive replacement.
The Acting Chief Justice expressed appreciation to Justice Oppong for his “significant contribution to professional legal education” during his tenure.
In a separate notice to students on August 12, Justice Oppong revealed that Sunday, August 31, 2025, will be his final day in office. He thanked God “for His love, guidance, and protection over the past three years,” adding that although he had hoped to complete his term or at least see through the current academic year and the October Call to the Bar ceremony, “sadly that was not to be.”
He wished Part II students success in their upcoming Call to the Bar, and encouraged Part I students to persevere in their studies. He also urged the student body to offer “even greater respect, cooperation, and support” to his successor and the school’s management.
Justice Yaw Oppong, who is also the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, assumed the role in December 2022 and has overseen key developments at the Ghana School of Law during his tenure.
