Prof. Raymond Atuguba appointed acting Director of Legal Education
Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, has been appointed Acting Director of Legal Education at the General Legal Council. His appointment follows the recall of Justice B. Y. K. Oppong, Justice of the Court of Appeal, from his secondment as Director of Legal Education.
In a letter cited by Today.com.gh, dated August 8, 2025, and signed by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Justice Oppong was informed that the Judiciary now requires his “full services” at the Court of Appeal, effective September 1, 2025.
“You are to hand over to Professor Raymond A. Atuguba… while a search party is put in place for a permanent Director of Legal Education,” the letter stated, adding that the Acting Chief Justice was grateful for the “significant contribution” Justice Oppong had made to professional legal education during his tenure.
Justice Oppong’s recall marks the end of nearly three years at the helm of the Ghana School of Law. In a separate notice to students on August 12, he announced that Sunday, August 31, 2025, would be his final day in office, expressing gratitude to God “for His love, guidance, and protection” over his time in the role.
He acknowledged his disappointment at not completing his term or presiding over the upcoming Call to the Bar ceremony in October but offered his best wishes to Part II students and encouragement to Part I students to progress to the next stage of their studies. He urged the student body to extend “even greater respect, cooperation, and support” to his successor and the institution’s management.
Justice Yaw Oppong, who is also the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, was appointed Director of Legal Education in December 2022. His successor, Prof. Atuguba, is widely recognised for his contributions to legal scholarship, policy research, and advocacy in Ghana and across Africa.
