Kennedy Agyapong best to unite the NPP – Peter Amewu

John Peter Amewu has said Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong is the candidate best suited to unite the New Patriotic Party ahead of the 2028 elections.
The former Energy Minister made the remarks on Joy News’ PM Express, explaining that his assessment comes from years of direct interaction with all five leading aspirants.
“I have an opportunity to interact with all five other candidates. So I am in a position to tell you that I have dealt with all these people,” Amewu said.
The NPP’s main contenders are Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Ken Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Amewu noted that his experience working with these figures spans his tenure as Mayor of Hohoe in 2005–2006 and his later service in Cabinet and Parliament.
According to Amewu, the upcoming party primary is not just about selecting a strong candidate, but about choosing someone who can keep the party cohesive and appeal to voters nationwide.
“All five of those candidates are exceptionally good candidates. But we need a medium through which our party will be united. The election that is coming up in 2028 is not a normal election,” he said.
Amewu said his decision was also influenced by feedback from citizens across the country. He visited hospitals, markets, and taxi ranks to gauge public opinion, speaking with doctors, nurses, market women, and drivers.
“I have listened to the ground. I have listened to the taxi drivers. I have listened to the market women. I’ve gone to the hospital. I listened to the nurses, the doctors, and the general population. And so this election, it’s not because Kennedy is an individual. Kennedy is just a medium. The whole nation wants Kennedy,” he said.
He highlighted that the right candidate must combine public support with internal leadership qualities such as empathy, attentiveness, vision, and collaboration. Kennedy Agyapong, according to Amewu, brings these traits together, giving him a unique advantage in rallying the party.
“When it comes to the 2028 election, they may not be on the same level of platform with Kennedy in terms of the weight that people may have behind him. And so I think that Kennedy has this competitive advantage over the others. This basically explains the rationale. I think Kennedy is the best,” he added.
The NPP presidential primary is scheduled for 31 January 2026. Party officials have urged all aspirants and stakeholders to uphold unity, decorum, and mutual respect as the contest progresses.
