Kennedy Agyapong is the most competitive candidate – Peter Amewu

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu has singled out Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong as the candidate he believes holds the strongest competitive edge.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Amewu stressed that his endorsement comes after years of direct experience with all five leading aspirants, giving him a unique perspective on their capabilities.
“I have an opportunity to interact with all five other candidates. So I am in a position to tell you that I have dealt with all these people,” he explained.
Amewu reflected on decades of political service, from his tenure as Mayor of Hohoe in 2005 and 2006 to his time in Parliament and Cabinet. During these years, he interacted closely with figures such as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. He described his experience working with Dr. Bawumia as particularly instructive.
“I dealt with him, and we sat in the cabinet together. I worked under his economic management team as a team player,” Amewu noted.
While acknowledging the abilities of all contenders, he argued that the 2028 general election requires a candidate who can unify the party while appealing to the broader electorate. He pointed to feedback from citizens across multiple sectors—market traders, taxi drivers, nurses, doctors, and hospital staff—as a key factor shaping his choice.
“I have listened to the ground. I have listened to the taxi drivers. I have listened to the market women. I’ve gone to the hospital. I listened to the nurses, the doctors, and the general population. And so this election, it’s not because Kennedy is an individual. Kennedy is just a medium. The whole nation wants Kennedy,” he said.
Amewu also emphasized that winning elections depends not only on public support but on internal leadership qualities like empathy, vision, attentiveness, and collaboration. According to him, these factors account for the majority of electoral outcomes, giving Kennedy a decisive edge.
“When I have examined all these other five candidates, the best among them, the one that is most competitive in terms of this internal environment issue, is Kennedy Ohene Agyapong,” he said.
The NPP has called for decorum, unity, and mutual respect among all aspirants ahead of the primary, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
