You are a big liar – Kennedy Agyapong blasts Bawumia over Adu-Boahen comments

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong has launched a scathing attack on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of distorting history to gain political power.

Mr. Agyapong made the remarks during a campaign stop as tensions rise ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries for the 2028 general election.

“I’ve never seen a liar like our former flag bearer. He’s a liar,” Mr. Agyapong told party supporters. “He said Professor Adu Boahen didn’t contest again because he was sick. This man is a liar.”

The outspoken former lawmaker accused Dr. Bawumia of deliberately misleading party members about the political history of the late Professor Albert Adu Boahen, one of the NPP’s founding figures.

“Today I’m telling you he’s a liar. We shouldn’t vote for a liar. A man who is lying to have power. Wow!” he added, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Mr. Agyapong went on to give his own account of the party’s history, insisting that claims attributed to Dr. Bawumia were inaccurate.

“Listen to the history,” he said. “Adu-Boahen contested in 1992 in the primaries and he won. He went to the general election and lost.”

According to him, Professor Adu Boahen did not step aside due to ill health, as had been suggested, but was defeated fairly within the party four years later.

“In 1996, Kufuor contested Adu-Boahen and he beat him to become flag bearer,” Mr. Agyapong stated. “He was fighting to go unopposed and they did not agree and he was contested.”

The ex-Assin Central MP accused Dr. Bawumia of manipulating historical facts for political advantage, urging delegates to reject what he described as dishonesty.

“But you, [Bawumia] you want power and you lie and distort history,” he said. “Please don’t vote for him. He is a liar and everyone knows he is a liar. He is a big liar.”

Mr. Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia are both vying to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election, a contest that has increasingly featured sharp exchanges among aspirants.

Dr. Bawumia, a former Vice President and the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, is widely seen as a frontrunner in the race, while Mr. Agyapong has positioned himself as a blunt-talking alternative appealing to the party’s grassroots.

The escalating rhetoric reflects the high stakes of the primaries, as party delegates weigh leadership style, credibility and electoral appeal ahead of a crucial national contest.
