Late Ayawaso East MP to be buried today

The final funeral rites and burial of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, will take place today, Monday, January 5, at his constituency office in Nima–Kanda.

The lawmaker passed away on Sunday, January 4, after a period of illness. He reportedly died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, triggering an outpouring of tributes from colleagues in Parliament, party members and constituents across the Ayawaso enclave.

Announcing the burial arrangements, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah, said swift intervention by President John Dramani Mahama helped to fast-track the release of the late MP’s body to enable burial in accordance with Islamic customs.

“As we speak now, we have brought the body home,” Mr Jajah disclosed.

He explained that a Janazah prayer would be held this morning at exactly 10:00 am at the Ayawaso East Constituency Office, located along the Kanda Highway. According to him, the prayer marks the first phase of the burial programme.

“God willing, tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock, prayers will be observed at the Kanda Highway where his constituency office is. His Eminence, the National Chief Imam, will lead the Janazah prayer,” he said.

After the prayers, the body of the late MP will be conveyed to the Madina Cemetery for burial.

Naser Toure Mahama was first elected to Parliament in 2012 and entered the House in January 2013 as the representative for Ayawaso East in the Greater Accra Region. He went on to serve multiple terms, including in the Seventh and Ninth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic.

In Parliament, he was regarded as an experienced legislator and held several key committee roles. He served as Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee and was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, as well as the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.

Born on March 17, 1965, in Nima, Accra, Mr Toure Mahama attended West Africa Senior High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Central University College. He later obtained a Diploma in Governance from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and an MBA from Doshisha University in Japan.

Within the National Democratic Congress, he was known as a loyal party stalwart and a grassroots politician with deep ties to his constituency.

He retained his parliamentary seat in the 2024 general election, winning over 70 percent of valid votes cast, a result that reflected his strong local support.
