Let’s pass anti-LGBTQ+ bill before Parliamentary adjourn – Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for quick action on the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill before Parliament goes on recess.
He made the call when the House resumed sitting on Thursday, May 21, urging the committee in charge to present its report for debate and possible passage within the current meeting.
“In view of the significance of the bill and the need to advance the legislative process, I urge the committee to present its report for consideration and passage by the House before the end of this meeting. Very important,” he said.
Mr. Bagbin said the bill is of major national importance and should not be delayed, stressing the need for Parliament to complete its work on it before the end of the session.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, has triggered strong debate across Ghana.
Religious groups and traditional leaders back the bill, saying it reflects cultural and family values, while human rights groups and some international bodies have raised concerns.
The Speaker said Parliament is aware of public interest in the matter and the concerns about delays in its passage.
“Parliament has also taken note of the concerns recently expressed by sections of the public and various stakeholders regarding the delay in the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025,” he noted.
He added that the committee responsible for the bill has already completed public hearings and stakeholder consultations, and is ready to submit its report.
The bill had earlier been passed by Parliament but did not become law after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declined to assent to it before the end of the last Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin says Parliament remains committed to revisiting the legislation as discussions continue nationwide.
