‘Look at this good-looking guy’ – Trump warmly welcomes Ghanaian Ambassador to White House

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has officially begun his diplomatic mission after presenting his credentials to U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the White House.
The ceremony took place at the Oval Office, where Ambassador Smith was among 14 newly appointed envoys formally accredited to the United States.
The Ghanaian diplomat was notably the first ambassador received by President Trump during the session, a gesture seen as symbolically significant for Ghana–U.S. relations.
The moment attracted attention when President Trump, upon seeing Ambassador Smith, reacted warmly, exclaiming, “look at this good-looking guy,” a remark that drew light-hearted laughter in the Oval Office and set a cordial tone for the engagement.
During his interaction with the U.S. President, Ambassador Smith conveyed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve in Washington and delivered a message from President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting Ghana’s desire to deepen its long-standing partnership with the United States.
According to the Ghana Embassy in the United States, which shared details of the event on Facebook on Saturday, Ambassador Smith emphasized Ghana’s interest in expanding cooperation with the U.S., particularly in trade, investment, and economic diplomacy. He described Ghana as a stable democratic nation with a strategic position in West Africa and on the continent as a whole.
He noted that Ghana offers access to a sub-regional market of more than 400 million people and a continental market exceeding 1.4 billion people, making the country an attractive destination for American businesses seeking opportunities in Africa.
Ambassador Smith also drew attention to Ghana’s role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, positioning the country as a key hub for intra-African trade and investment. He indicated that this status enhances Ghana’s appeal as a base for companies looking to take advantage of Africa’s integrated market.
The Ambassador said Ghana is open to deeper engagement with U.S. firms, particularly in manufacturing, agribusiness, energy, technology, and the services sector. He underscored the country’s readiness to support partnerships that promote mutual economic growth and shared prosperity.
As part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties, Ambassador Smith extended Ghana’s readiness to host President Trump, describing such a visit as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation between the two countries.
The credential presentation marks a major milestone in Ambassador Smith’s tenure in Washington and signals a renewed phase of engagement aimed at advancing U.S.–Ghana relations across political, economic, and people-to-people fronts.
