Mahama approves GH¢300 million for flood relief, mitigation efforts

President John Dramani Mahama has authorised the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency relief operations and strengthen flood prevention measures. This follows Monday’s devastating floods across Accra and parts of southern Ghana.
The intervention comes after hours of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding, leaving several communities submerged, displacing residents and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, June 30, the funds will be released by the Minister for Finance to facilitate both immediate humanitarian assistance and long-term flood mitigation interventions.
Out of the total amount, GH¢150 million has been allocated to provide emergency relief for individuals and communities affected by the floods. The remaining GH¢150 million will finance projects aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding across vulnerable areas.
In addition to the financial support, President Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to deploy personnel to assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency responders in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The deployment is expected to enhance search-and-rescue efforts, support the evacuation of residents in affected communities and facilitate the distribution of relief items to victims.
The President’s directives follow an aerial assessment he conducted on Monday, June 29, during which he inspected several flood-affected communities to evaluate the scale of destruction caused by the torrential rains.
The Presidency said the government’s latest intervention forms part of a broader strategy to provide immediate support to flood victims while strengthening Ghana’s capacity to respond to recurring flood disasters.
The statement added that the measures are intended to safeguard lives and property and improve the country’s preparedness against future flooding incidents.
