Mahama cuts sod for Atimpoku–Aflao road project under ‘Big Push’

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the redevelopment of the Atimpoku–Asikuma–Anyrawase–Ho–Denu–Aflao road under his Big Push Agenda.
The sod-cutting ceremony to officially launch the Big Push Agenda in the Volta Region was held today. It was attended by regional chiefs, NDC party executives, government officials, contractors, youth groups, and hundreds of residents.
According to President Mahama, the Atimpoku–Aflao road project is one of the most critical under the Big Push Agenda and is designed to revamp infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and connect communities across Ghana. He stressed that the initiative will not only serve the Volta Region but also boost cross-border trade between Ghana and Togo.
“This road is not just a road for the Volta Region, it is a national economic lifeline. From tourism and agriculture to trade and education, this network supports thousands of livelihoods. Under the Big Push, we are fixing it for good,” Mahama declared.
The President noted that the poor condition of the Atimpoku–Aflao stretch has long frustrated transport operators, farmers, traders, and travelers. He said the Big Push Agenda provides a comprehensive solution that will strengthen Ghana’s economic backbone while improving the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
The project, when completed, is expected to significantly improve travel time and reduce transportation costs, boost agricultural and fishery trade along the route, and enhance regional integration by facilitating smoother cross-border movement between Ghana and Togo. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs will also be created during construction and maintenance.
Local chiefs and opinion leaders who attended the sod-cutting ceremony commended the President’s commitment to the Volta Region. They described the project as a long-overdue response to decades of appeals and pledged their full support to ensure smooth execution.
“For years, we have petitioned governments about this road, but today, our cries are finally being heard. We stand with President Mahama and his Big Push vision, and we will cooperate with contractors to make sure the project succeeds,” a chief from the area said.
President Mahama assured residents that the Big Push will not be limited to the Volta Region but will deliver roads, schools, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure across the country. He emphasized that inclusive development remains at the heart of his administration’s agenda.
Construction works on the Atimpoku–Aflao road are expected to begin in the coming weeks, with contractors already mobilizing equipment and personnel to the site.
