Mahama declares infrastructure reset with GHC30.8b ‘Big Push’ investment

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a record GH¢30.8 billion allocation for the government’s flagship Big Push road construction initiative in the 2026 national budget.
The amount, more than double this year’s GH¢13.8 billion, was unveiled at the Wa Big Push Project sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, as part of the government’s plan to fast-track infrastructure development and strengthen regional connectivity.
President Mahama said the massive investment reflects his administration’s determination to complete stalled road projects and open new transport corridors, particularly in northern Ghana.
“This initiative is a cornerstone of our long-term national development agenda,” he said, stressing that its success depends on quality work, fiscal discipline, and public accountability.
Addressing contractors and engineers, the president issued a stern warning against shoddy work and wasteful practices. “The day of poor construction, inflated claims, and abandoned projects is over,” he declared. “Ghana deserves better. You must deliver quality on schedule and within budget, and the Ghanaian taxpayer must see value in every kilometre of road we construct.”
President Mahama assured the public that funding will not hinder progress on the projects.
“This year, the Finance Minister put GH¢13.8 billion into the Big Push, and next year he’s reserving GH¢30.8 billion. So payment is not going to be the problem,” he said. “If a contractor is not working, it is not because he hasn’t been paid. Once your certificate is raised, inspected, and the road meets specification, you will receive your payment immediately.”
He further called on residents to take ownership of ongoing works. “To achieve success in our communities, I urge you to support the work, protect the materials, and cooperate with the engineers,” Mahama appealed.
The unprecedented allocation marks one of the largest infrastructure commitments in Ghana’s recent history.
Ahead of the anticipated projects in the coming months, President Mahama has asked Ghanaians to bear with his government during incoveniences that might stem from road constructions.
