Mahama extends IGP Christian Tetteh Yuhonu’s tenure by two years

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yuhonu, allowing him to remain in office until December 2027.
The decision was communicated in a letter dated November 25, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.
According to the letter, the extension, which begins on December 28, 2025, follows a recommendation from the Police Council and is grounded in the legal provisions governing the Ghana Police Service. The IGP was originally due to retire in December 2025 upon attaining the statutory retirement age.
The President’s directive emphasized the administration’s confidence in Mr. Yuhonu’s capacity to steer ongoing reforms and maintain institutional stability. The letter stated:
“Following the recommendation of the Police Council and in accordance with the relevant provisions governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years.”
It added that the IGP is expected to continue discharging the full responsibilities of his office throughout the extended term.
“Your re-engagement takes effect from 28th December, 2025. During this period, you shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office.”
The letter further directed the IGP to respond in writing within three days to confirm his acceptance:
“You are kindly requested to indicate your acceptance of this re-engagement in writing within three days upon receipt of this letter.”
Christian Tetteh Yuhonu was appointed IGP by President Mahama on March 13, 2025, following consultations with the Council of State, and was sworn in the next day. His appointment marked a major leadership transition in the Ghana Police Service, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Prior to assuming the top position, Mr. Yuhonu served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations—a role he was appointed to by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in July 2024. With more than four decades of service, he has held several prominent positions, including Director-General of Operations, Director-General of Police Intelligence, and Greater Accra Regional Commander.
His elevation to IGP earlier in the year generated significant public discussion, with debates surrounding the timing, background, and institutional direction of the Police Service under the new administration.
The extension reflects the government’s intention to maintain continuity as the Ghana Police Service implements operational reforms, restructures specialised units, and strengthens public security systems.
The Presidency, through the letter, highlighted that Mr. Yuhonu’s continued leadership is considered essential to the success of these reforms and to sustaining confidence within the Service.
President Mahama concluded the letter with assurances of the highest regard for the IGP’s service and leadership.
