Mahama in Qatar to attend 2025 Doha Forum

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Doha to participate in the 2025 Doha Forum, a one-day working visit undertaken at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar.

His trip follows Parliament’s recent ratification of a Labour Mobility Agreement under Article 75 of the Constitution, a deal that guarantees improved salaries, decent accommodation, medical support, insurance cover, and enforceable contracts for Ghanaians preparing to work in Qatar.

The agreement represents one of the strongest protections yet for Ghanaian migrant workers.

While in Doha, President Mahama will deliver opening remarks on the theme “Education as Justice in Times of Crisis” before joining a high-level panel on economic empowerment and inclusive prosperity on the African continent.

He is also scheduled to meet H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss the next phase of Ghana–Qatar cooperation, a relationship that began in 1982 and now spans more than a dozen agreements across trade, aviation, labour, sports and investment promotion.

His arrival aboard a fully Qatari state-sponsored Executive Qatar Airways flight underscores the significance of the visit, which is expected to deepen bilateral ties that have grown steadily since the Emir’s 2017 visit to Accra and the establishment of a Qatari Embassy in Ghana the following year.

The 2025 Doha Forum, held under the theme “Justice in Action: Beyond Promises to Progress,” brings together global leaders to confront interlinked crises, including conflict, global health pressures, disrupted education systems, and widening inequalities between the Global North and Global South.

Organisers emphasise that progress requires practical solutions, transparent resource distribution, and shared technological advancements rather than declarations that remain unfulfilled.

Over the years, the forum has become a major international platform built on diplomacy, dialogue, and diversity, hosting policymakers seeking durable responses to global instability.

Ghana’s participation forms part of Mahama’s broader advocacy for equitable international partnerships and expanded opportunities for African economies.

The Ghana–Qatar relationship continues to evolve, reflected in agreements on double taxation avoidance, joint trade and investment promotion, civil aviation cooperation, labour employment frameworks, and an arrangement abolishing visa requirements for diplomatic and special passport holders.

Both governments view these milestones as key pillars for an expanded development partnership.
