Man, 22, gets 10-year sentence after admitting to robbery in Kumasi

A 22-year-old man, Christian Owusu, has been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Atasemanso Circuit Court for a robbery that occurred in Kumasi last month.

In a statement dated Friday, August 14, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit said the Ashanti Central District Police Command confirmed the conviction today, following a swift investigation into an incident that took place on July 21, 2026.

According to police reports, the victim, a woman whose name has been withheld, was walking towards Konkromase Township at approximately 12:21 PM when she was accosted and threatened. The suspect forcibly took her handbag, which contained personal effects and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Following a complaint lodged at the police station later that same day, law enforcement launched an investigation that led to Owusu’s arrest on August 4, 2026. He was brought before the court on August 7, where he faced a single charge of robbery.

In a turn of events that expedited the judicial process, Owusu pleaded guilty to the charge. Before the sentencing, he appealed to the presiding judge, His Lordship Mr. Kwaku Baah Frimpong, for leniency and forgiveness.

However, the court weighed the severity of the crime and the impact on the victim, ultimately imposing the minimum sentence of ten years imprisonment with hard labour.

Following the ruling, the convict was immediately handed over to the authorities at the Kumasi Central Prisons to begin serving his sentence.

Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Region, praised the investigative team for their diligence in securing a quick resolution to the case.
