Measures underway to restore water access in Gomoa communities – Mutawakilu

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has initiated steps to restore water supply in Gomoa and surrounding communities following disruptions at the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant.

The announcement was made during a visit by GWL MD, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, to the Omanhene of Gomoa Ajumako, Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI.

According to Mr. Mutawakilu, the temporary shutdown of the Kwanyako plant was caused by extremely high turbidity levels in the Ayensu River. Investigations attributed the increase in turbidity to illegal mining activities upstream, which significantly affected water quality and made treatment unsafe.

To address the situation, GWL is assessing alternative water sources, including the Gyankrom Dam, which has the potential to supplement the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant and ensure a reliable water supply for affected communities.

“Our team is evaluating short-term and long-term solutions to maintain water access for residents,” Mr. Mutawakilu said. “The assessment of alternative sources like the Gyankrom Dam is a critical step toward mitigating the impact of environmental challenges on water supply.”

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah XI commended GWL for its proactive response and engagement with local authorities. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between traditional leaders, government agencies, and other stakeholders to address the water supply issues. “The water situation has become critical, but we are encouraged by the Managing Director’s engagement. We are ready to support efforts to identify lasting solutions,” the Omanhene stated.

GWL confirmed that it continues to monitor water quality in the Ayensu River while implementing measures to restore service. The company emphasized that all assessments and actions are being carried out to ensure safe, consistent water delivery to Gomoa and neighboring areas.

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to manage water resources effectively and address challenges caused by environmental factors such as illegal mining. GWL has indicated that updates will be provided to the public as alternative sources are developed and measures are put in place to restore water supply fully.
