Ministry of Education directs GES to investigate students’ hooliganism

The Ministry of Education has condemned, in the strongest terms, acts of violence captured in viral videos circulating on social media, which allegedly involve students from two schools in the Central Region.
In a Facebook post, Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Abas Apaak, described the incidents as deeply troubling and unacceptable within the country’s educational environment. Initial information, according to the statement, indicates that the students seen in the videos are from two separate schools in the Central Region.
The Ministry disclosed that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service has been directed to immediately investigate the matter. As part of that directive, the Director-General is scheduled to meet with the Central Regional Director of GES, the relevant district directors within whose jurisdictions the schools are located, and the heads of the affected schools. The meeting is set to take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the GES headquarters in Accra.
The statement stressed that while the Ministry awaits a full report from the Director-General, the leadership of the sector views the acts of violence with utmost seriousness.
“Even as we await the report from the Director General of the GES, let me state that the Minister for Education and I take a very serious view of these acts of violence. Consequently, the culprits and perpetrators can expect the most severe sanctions,” the Deputy Minister stated.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline and safeguarding students within Ghana’s educational institutions. It emphasized that schools must remain safe spaces for learning, character formation, and responsible citizenship, and not grounds for disorder or violence.
The development follows widespread public concern over the disturbing scenes captured in the viral footage, which have reignited debate about student conduct and supervision during school activities.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident after sighting the viral videos and has assured the public that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice.
