Mobile Money transactions record GH¢518.4bn in December – BoG

Mobile money activity in Ghana reached an all-time high in December 2025, with transactions climbing to GH¢518.4 billion, reinforcing the platform’s dominance in the country’s evolving payments ecosystem.
Figures from the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data show that December marked the peak month for mobile money usage in 2025, reflecting heightened economic activity during the festive season and the continued shift toward digital financial services.
Transaction volumes also surged, with nearly one billion transactions processed within the month. A total of 982 million mobile money transactions were recorded, up significantly from the 892 million registered in November, pointing to increased reliance on mobile wallets for both retail spending and person-to-person transfers.
The data further indicates steady growth in financial inclusion. Active mobile money accounts rose to 26.7 million in December, compared to 25.5 million the previous month. Registered accounts also expanded to 80.5 million, underscoring sustained onboarding of users into Ghana’s digital finance space.
Supporting this growth is a widening agent network. By the end of December, the number of active mobile money agents stood at 491,000 nationwide, ensuring broader access to cash-in and cash-out services, particularly in peri-urban and rural communities.
Balances held in mobile money wallets reached GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level for the year, suggesting growing confidence in mobile wallets not just as transaction tools but also as short-term savings and liquidity stores.
Interoperable mobile money transactions also saw notable gains. Transaction values increased to GH¢5.8 billion in December from GH¢4.9 billion in November, driven largely by higher cross-network transfers and interbank activity during the holiday period.
Meanwhile, traditional payment channels continued to lag behind. Cheque transactions for the month amounted to GH¢37.3 billion, while electronic platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transaction value—figures that remain well below mobile money totals.
The December performance highlights mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s retail payments system. Analysts expect usage to remain strong in 2026, supported by expanding agent networks, rising smartphone adoption, and consumer preference for faster, cashless transactions.
