NADMO supports tidal wave victims in Anlo District

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has provided relief support to residents of Fuveme in the Anlo District following destruction caused by tidal waves.

The intervention comes after seawater breached sections of the Volta River, flooding communities and disrupting livelihoods in the area.

A delegation led by the Director-General of NADMO, Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, visited the affected community to assess the extent of damage and engage residents on possible long-term solutions.

The team was received by the Volta Regional NADMO Director, Mr Pascal Agbagba, the District Chief Executive for Anlo, Sandra Seyram Kpedor, and the Assemblyman for Fuveme.

During the visit, the delegation toured the affected areas, where tidal waves have caused significant damage, particularly to farming and fishing activities.

The intrusion of seawater into the river system has disrupted irrigation and contributed to a decline in fish stocks, raising concerns about food security and income loss among farmers and fisherfolk.

Addressing residents, Major Dr Kuyon stressed the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate intervention.

He noted that the continued intrusion of seawater into the River Volta poses a serious threat to communities along the basin and requires coordinated action.

He also assured residents of the government’s commitment to addressing the situation, with support expected from external stakeholders.

As part of immediate relief efforts, NADMO distributed essential items to affected households to cushion them against the impact of the disaster.

The items included 400 bags of rice, 350 bags of maize, 200 bags of peas, 150 cartons of cooking oil, 100 packets of soap and 2,000 mosquito nets.

Other members of the delegation included the Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations, Teddy Addi-Safori, the Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical Services, Ahmed-Rufai Aggudey, the Director of Operations, Lawrence Ahli, and the Director of Inspectorate, Richard Amo-Yartey.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts by NADMO to respond to disasters and support affected communities while working towards sustainable solutions to recurring tidal wave incidents in coastal and riverine areas.
