Energy Analyst advises against turning energy sector into a political tool

Kwegyir Essel, energy analyst – amid ongoing power outages and rising public concern, is calling for unity and calm.
He also urged Ghanaians to avoid politicising the situation and instead focus on practical solutions to strengthen the energy sector.
Speaking on the situation, Kwegyir Essel noted that power outages are often the result of technical maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and operational demands, not political sabotage.
He explained that while outages can be frustrating, many are linked to necessary maintenance, system upgrades, and operational constraints that are common in energy systems worldwide.
Essel stressed that Ghana must focus on strengthening its energy infrastructure rather than allowing partisan narratives to dominate public discourse.
“Energy is too important to Ghana’s development to be turned into a political tool. What we need now is unity, trust in our institutions, and a shared commitment to progress,” he said.
Ghana’s power sector relies on key institutions such as the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), GRIDCo, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), all of which operate with technical mandates to serve the nation.
Essel emphasised that these bodies must be supported to function independently and professionally.
He further noted that maintaining a stable power supply requires coordinated efforts, including effective load management, reliable fuel supply, and continuous infrastructure investment.
Politicising these challenges, he warned, only weakens institutional credibility and slows progress.
Mr. Essel concluded that building a resilient and reliable energy sector will require cooperation across all levels of society, urging stakeholders to prioritise national interest over political division.
