Another 40 armoured cars are coming – Mahama to IGP

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to procure 40 additional armoured vehicles to strengthen the operations of the Ghana Police Service.
“I’m happy to inform the IGP that another 40 armored cars are coming,” he said.
The President made the announcement during the commissioning of a divisional police headquarters at Laasi in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.
He indicated that the incoming fleet will complement another 40 armoured vehicles acquired last year, which he said have already enhanced the police’s ability to combat armed robbery across the country.
President Mahama stressed that ensuring the safety of security personnel must remain a priority, particularly in the fight against violent crime.
“When you send our officers to protect you and fight violent people, you have to provide them with the instruments and the tools to be able to do so,” he stated.
Reflecting on past practices, he noted that officers were previously deployed in less-protected vehicles, exposing them to danger during operations.
“In the past, we used to give them Nissan Navara light-skinned pickups to go on patrol against armed robbers. And we lost many men and women in the line of duty. We don’t want that to happen again. They must be able to go and work for us and go back safely to their families,” he said.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the security sector through sustained investment, particularly within the police service.
“My administration continues to prioritize investments in the security sector, particularly in the Ghana police,” he added.
He noted that the broader objective is to build a modern, professional and people-centred police service capable of preventing crime through intelligence-led policing, innovation and stronger community partnerships.
President Mahama also highlighted the impact of previously procured armoured vehicles, noting that they have played a significant role in supporting operations and combating armed robbery nationwide.
