The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested two persons after intercepting a truck allegedly carrying a large quantity of suspected Indian hemp at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region.
According to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Tema Regional Police Headquarters on June 16, 2026, the operation was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, following information received from the Volta Regional Police Command.
The statement said police officers intercepted a green HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN 2287-24, which was heading to Tema from Juapong. A search conducted on the vehicle uncovered fifty-six maxi sacks containing approximately eighty wrapped parcels of plant material suspected to be drugs in each sack.
Two suspects, identified as 26-year-old Solomon Akuaku, the driver of the vehicle, and his mate, 31-year-old James Tetteh, were arrested during the operation. Preliminary investigations indicate that the exhibits were being transported to Ada.
The suspects reportedly told investigators that the owner of the consignment, known only as “Red,” was travelling ahead of them and leading the way. Police said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the alleged owner of the suspected narcotics.
In the statement, the Tema Regional Police Command noted that, “The truck was intercepted, and a search revealed fifty-six (56) maxi sacks containing approximately eighty (80) wrapped parcels of plant material suspected to be narcotic drugs in each sack.”
The police further disclosed that the suspects remain in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the seized exhibits have been retained for evidential purposes.
The police reaffirming its commitment to fighting drug-related crimes, the Ghana Police Service urged the public to support law enforcement efforts.
The statement emphasized that the service “remains committed to combating drug trafficking and related crimes and urges the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by providing credible information on criminal activities.”
Meanwhile, the case is currently under investigation as police continue efforts to track down other individuals connected to the consignment.
