NDC praises NPP Presidential primaries, commends police professionalism

The National Democratic Congress has congratulated the New Patriotic Party for organising peaceful presidential primaries that produced former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flag bearer.
In a statement issued in Accra and signed by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, the NDC said it “hereby offers its congratulations to the opposition New Patriotic Party for the successful organization of a violence-free presidential candidate primaries.”
The party noted that the process, which saw Dr Bawumia emerge as the NPP’s candidate for the December 2028 general election, demonstrated the ability of political parties to conduct competitive internal elections without unrest.
It added that peaceful contests are critical to sustaining public confidence in Ghana’s democracy.
Dr Bawumia won the primaries in a landslide, polling about 56 percent of the total votes cast by NPP delegates nationwide, giving him a clear victory over the other contenders.
The emphatic margin positions him as the party’s leading face as it prepares for the next general election.
The NDC also reserved praise for state security agencies involved in the process, saying, “We take this opportunity to also commend the Ghana Police Service for the remarkable and efficient manner that they secured the entire process.”
According to the statement, the professionalism displayed by the police was central to maintaining calm throughout the exercise.
Beyond the conduct of the primaries, the opposition party stressed the need for collective responsibility among political actors.
“We welcome the collaboration and participation of the NPP and all other political parties in our collective national quest to strengthen and deepen our democracy,” the statement said.
It further acknowledged the post-election conduct of candidates who did not prevail in the NPP contest.
“We have also taken note of the reconciliatory concession statements from the other unsuccessful candidates, and hope that they would walk their talk,” the NDC stated.
Following his victory, Dr Bawumia pledged to work with his former rivals to unify the party as it intensifies preparations for the 2028 elections.
He has said the focus of the NPP will now shift from internal competition to building a united front capable of winning national support.
