No one is safe from galamsey consequences – Elvis Darko

No community is immune to the devastating effects of illegal mining, Editor of The Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has warned, stressing that floods caused by environmental degradation affect everyone.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Mr. Darko said the impact of galamsey extends far beyond those directly involved in the activity, as entire communities are forced to deal with flooding, damaged infrastructure, and loss of lives.
He explained that the destruction of water bodies, forests, and farmlands through illegal mining weakens the environment’s natural ability to manage heavy rainfall, increasing the likelihood of severe flooding.
“Floodwaters do not distinguish between those who participated in illegal mining and those who did not,” he stated, emphasizing that innocent residents often suffer the greatest consequences.
According to him, remaining silent in the face of illegal mining only allows the problem to worsen, leading to greater economic losses, displacement of families, and avoidable tragedies.
He further urged citizens to speak up against environmental destruction and resist practices that threaten the country’s natural resources and public safety.
He called for a united effort from citizens, community leaders, civil society organisations, and state institutions to combat galamsey and protect communities from future environmental disasters.
