NSA partners Absa Bank to offer overdraft for service personnel

The National Service Authority (NSA) has announced a partnership with Absa Bank Ghana Limited to provide an overdraft facility for National Service Personnel to cushion them against delays in the payment of allowances.
In a statement released on April 17, 2026, the Authority said the initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA), is aimed at providing immediate financial relief to personnel across the country.
The Director-General of the NSA, Ruth Dela Seddoh, acknowledged the financial strain often caused by delays in disbursement and said the Authority was taking steps to address the challenge.
“We hear the frustration of our service personnel, and we are taking concrete action. Delays in release of funds have, at times, placed hardship on young graduates serving their nation,” she said.
She noted that the collaboration, facilitated by NASPA, reflects the concerns of personnel nationwide and seeks to ensure that service personnel are not left stranded.
“This NSA partnership with Absa Bank… will ensure that no NSP will be left stranded due to timing mismatches between their service and their allowance,” she added.
Under the agreement, Absa Bank will offer qualifying personnel an overdraft facility of up to 85 per cent of their monthly allowance. The support is designed to help beneficiaries meet essential expenses while awaiting payment.
The facility comes with key benefits, including zero interest for the duration of the delay, no collateral requirements, and automatic repayment once the delayed allowance is released.
Officials say the intervention is expected to ease the burden on personnel who often struggle to cover basic needs such as rent, transportation and feeding during delays.
The overdraft will be accessible to all active National Service Personnel with an Absa Ignition Account, a youth-focused banking product that offers zero maintenance fees, a free international debit card and additional benefits such as travel insurance.
Interested personnel can open the account through the NSA’s online portal to facilitate easy access to the facility.
Commenting on the initiative, the Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana, Edward Nartey Botchway, said the bank recognises the impact of payment delays on young graduates.
“At Absa, we understand how allowance delays can put real pressure on young graduates, especially when they are trying to cover basics such as rent and transport,” he said.
“This collaboration… aims to bridge that gap and ensure that a delay in disbursement does not become a crisis for our national service personnel,” he added.
The NSA reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring timely payment of allowances while continuing to work with stakeholders to enhance support for service personnel nationwide.
