Opong-Fosu calls for end to toxic political discourse, condemns insults and ethnic rhetoric

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairmanship aspirant Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu has called on political leaders and media commentators to end insults, character assassination and ethnic-based rhetoric, warning that such practices threaten national unity and peace.
He made the call while delivering a keynote address as Special Guest at the 2026 Hlefi Traditional Area Yam Festival in the Ho West Constituency, held under the theme “Uniting Citizens for Development.”
Dr. Opong-Fosu expressed concern about the growing normalisation of profanities and personal attacks in political discussions, particularly on the airwaves.
He argued that national development depends not only on sound economic policies and infrastructure but also on trust, mutual respect and social cohesion.
He cautioned that reckless political communication could deepen divisions and create conditions for conflict if left unchecked.
“Look at the history of nations that fell into chaos—it did not start with guns; it started with tongues,” Opong-Fosu warned.
“When political actors and social commentators sow verbal aggression into the soul of our communities, we reap harvest fields of hatred, distrust, and violence.”
The former Local Government Minister urged political actors across the political divide to exercise restraint and respect, even when they disagree on national issues.
He also challenged traditional authorities to take a firmer stance against divisive political commentary and hold those responsible accountable for their conduct.
According to him, Ghana’s development challenges, including youth unemployment and poor road infrastructure, require cooperation among political opponents rather than hostility and personal attacks.
“No political victory, no partisan agenda, and no parliamentary seat is worth sacrificing the peace, the unity, and the future of the Republic of Ghana that we call our home,” he said.
Opong-Fosu outlines chairmanship vision
Dr. Opong-Fosu said his bid for the NDC National Chairmanship was focused on building a strong, united and cohesive party capable of consolidating its gains and protecting the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama.
He called for a political culture anchored in mutual respect, discipline, and collective responsibility, stressing that national development requires leaders who can work together despite their partisan differences.
His remarks come as the NDC prepares for its internal national contests, with party cohesion and leadership expected to be central to its organisational direction.
Dr. Opong-Fosu also pledged to collaborate with Ho West Member of Parliament Emmanuel Bedzrah towards the realisation of a water project aimed at improving access to water for residents.
The pledge underscored the festival’s focus on community development, bringing together traditional authorities, political leaders, and residents to celebrate the harvest season and discuss local development priorities.
The gathering was chaired by Efo Biadela Mortey Akpadzi, a former Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and Chairman of the Gold Board Tribunal. It was attended by Togbui Adame Danku X, traditional leaders from across the Volta Region, Mr. Bedzrah and other dignitaries.
The annual Hlefi Yam Festival is a major cultural celebration organised by the chiefs and people of the Hlefi Traditional Area in the Ho West Constituency.
Beyond marking the end of the farming season, the event serves as a platform for cultural preservation, community engagement and the mobilisation of support for local development projects.
