Parliament mourns Ayawaso East Mp Naser Toure Mahama
Parliament of the Republic of Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Naser Toure Mahama, describing his passing as a major loss to the House and the nation.
In an official press statement issued on it Facebook page, Parliament said it received news of the lawmaker’s death with profound sadness, noting that Ghana had lost a committed legislator whose public service was marked by diligence, integrity, and compassion.
“This morning, the nation has lost a dedicated public servant, a steadfast advocate for his constituents, and a parliamentarian whose commitment to national development was unwavering,” the statement said.
The statement, issued on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, the Leadership of the House, and the Parliamentary Service, conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, members of Parliament, constituents of Ayawaso East, and all who were impacted by the late MP’s work.
Parliament paid tribute to Hon. Mahama’s contributions to parliamentary work and constituency development, describing him as a legislator who embodied the values of service, responsibility, and philanthropy.
“Hon. Naser Toure Mahama served with diligence, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility,” Parliament noted. “His contributions to debates, advocacy for development initiatives, and tireless efforts to improve the lives of his people will not be forgotten.”
The House acknowledged that his death has left a void, particularly among colleagues who worked closely with him across committees and legislative assignments.
“This is a difficult moment for Parliament and for the people of Ayawaso East,” the statement added. “We share in the pain of his family and hold them in our thoughts and prayers.”
Parliament further appealed to the media and the general public to respect the privacy of the family during the period of mourning and to avoid sensational reporting as funeral arrangements are awaited.
“May the Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement concluded.
The press statement was signed by the Director of Media Relations of Parliament, acting on behalf of the institution.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker was said to have died over the weekend, according to party sources and close associates, although official details surrounding the cause of death have not yet been formally released.
Hon. Mahama was first elected to Parliament in 2012 and entered the House in January 2013. He served multiple terms, including membership of the Seventh and Ninth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic.
He held several key committee positions, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee, and was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.
Born on March 17, 1965, in Nima, Accra, he was educated at West Africa Senior High School, Central University College, GIMPA, and Japan’s Doshisha University. He retained his parliamentary seat in the 2024 general election with over seventy percent of the valid votes cast.
