Payments of salary arrears for newly recruited teachers approved

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the government has approved the payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to newly recruited teachers under the 2024 financial clearance.
In a statement released on 20 April 2026, GES indicated that the approval was granted by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD).
The directive covers eligible newly recruited teachers whose salary arrears accumulated between 1 August 2024 and November 2025.
According to the GES, the move forms part of efforts to regularise salary payments and address delays affecting teachers who have already reported to post and begun work within the period under review.
The statement noted: “Management of the Ghana Education Service wishes to inform the general public, especially newly recruited teachers, that approval has been granted for the payment of outstanding salary arrears associated with the utilisation of the 2024 financial clearance.”
GES explained that the arrears will be paid in instalments rather than as a single lump sum, beginning in May 2026.
It outlined the payment schedule as follows: May 2026 – four months’ arrears; June 2026 – four months’ arrears; July 2026 – four months’ arrears; and August 2026 – four months’ arrears.
The Service said the staggered approach is designed to ensure “efficiency, accuracy, and transparency in the disbursement process,” and to facilitate proper validation and processing of payments through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.
GES has directed all Regional Directors of Education to communicate the directive to Heads of Schools across the country to ensure that all affected teachers are duly informed without delay.
Heads of Schools are expected to further relay the information to newly recruited teachers under their supervision, particularly those who fall within the approved arrears period.
The statement, signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, assured teachers of management’s commitment to their welfare.
It added: “Management assures all staff of its continued commitment to their welfare and appreciates their patience and cooperation throughout the process.”
The announcement is expected to bring relief to hundreds of newly recruited teachers who have been awaiting the payment of accumulated arrears as part of their employment package under the public sector payroll system.
