Police arrest Abronye over offensive conduct
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.
The arrest is in connection with offensive conduct deemed likely to disturb public peace.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 8, the Police explained that Abronye was arrested earlier in the day and is currently in custody. He is expected to be arraigned before the court within the coming days.
According to the Police, the arrest of Abronye is linked to allegations of offensive conduct that could lead to a breach of public peace. While full details were not disclosed, the Service stressed that his case will follow due legal process.
The development comes at a time when Abronye has been in the public spotlight after submitting formal applications for political asylum in eight countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Canada, Italy, and Côte d’Ivoire. In those petitions, he claimed he had been subjected to relentless political harassment, sustained threats to his life, and what he described as deliberate misuse of security institutions against him. These, he argued, created an environment that made it unsafe for him to remain in the country.
Over the weekend, investigators reportedly conducted a search at the residence of former NPP Youth Organiser, Moses Abor, as part of inquiries connected to Abronye. However, he was not found there, making Monday’s arrest the first major breakthrough in the ongoing case.
Known for his outspoken and often controversial political commentary, Abronye has frequently attracted both attention and criticism in Ghana’s political space.
