Police arrest six suspects over Adjoa Safo shooting

Police have arrested six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo at Kwabenya on Sunday.
The arrests come hours after reports emerged that unidentified gunmen had opened fire on the former lawmaker’s vehicle near the residence of her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, amid heightened tensions over the Kristo Asafo succession dispute. The incident left Adwoa Safo injured and receiving treatment at a medical facility.
A press release issued by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, said the suspects had been apprehended as investigations intensified.
The statement said, “The Ghana Police Service has arrested six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident involving Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, which occurred at Kwabenya on 21st June 2026.”
Police also disclosed that a search operation led to the retrieval of several weapons and ammunition believed to be linked to the incident.
According to the statement, “a search conducted has led to the retrieval of five pump-action guns, one Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and communication equipment.”
Preliminary investigations indicate that personnel from the National Operations Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate, who were on special duty, received a distress call from a residence at Kwabenya and immediately proceeded to the scene.
Investigators established that a ceremony was underway at the residence of Mr. Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat alias Akofena when Adwoa Safo reportedly arrived and requested access to the premises but was denied entry.
Police further revealed that armed security personnel stationed at the residence allegedly discharged firearms during the incident.
The statement said the shooting “resulted in the injury to Hon. Adwoa Safo” and added that “her vehicle was also found with multiple gunshot marks.”
Earlier reports indicated that Adwoa Safo sustained an injury near her neck after several rounds were fired at her vehicle during the confrontation.
The Ghana Police Service said the six suspects and all exhibits retrieved from the scene had been transferred to the Police Headquarters to support ongoing investigations.
Police added that efforts were underway to identify and arrest all other persons connected to the incident as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
