Police grab Adwoa Safo’s brother following shooting incident

Police have arrested Sarah Adwoa Safo’s brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena, and two others over the shooting incident involving the former Dome-Kwabenya MP.
The Ghana Police Service announced that Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, reported himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, June 22, before being transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters to assist with investigations.
According to a police statement, a search conducted on his vehicle and residence at Kwabenya led to the retrieval of a large cache of ammunition and firearms.
Police said the operation uncovered “120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 45 calibre ammunition, 25 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, additional loaded magazines, and two Glock pistols; one of which is registered.”
The statement further disclosed that investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, in connection with the case.
Authorities stated that “all the suspects are currently in Police custody, assisting with investigations and will be put before the court on 23rd June 2026.”
The arrests come a day after unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on the vehicle of former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, during a tense gathering near the residence of her brother in Kwabenya on Sunday.
The incident is believed to be linked to disagreements surrounding the succession process within the Kristo Asafo family following the death of Apostle Emeritus Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
Sources indicated that Akofena had been mobilising supporters in connection with efforts to install him as successor to his late father, a move that has reportedly generated opposition from some family members.
Police officers from the Dome District Command had earlier been deployed to the area after receiving information about rising tensions.
Witnesses alleged that armed men, said to be acting on instructions from Akofena, opened fire on the former legislator’s vehicle while she was present at the scene.
The attackers reportedly discharged about 15 rounds of ammunition, with one bullet said to have grazed the former lawmaker near her neck.
She was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where she was stabilised and continues to receive treatment.
The latest developments are expected to intensify public attention on the ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission ahead of the scheduled burial and funeral ceremonies of Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka on July 30 and 31, 2026, as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
