Police uncover GHc1.4million suspected cannabis in Oti

Police in the Oti Region have uncovered suspected cannabis valued at more than GHc1.4 million from an impounded truck intercepted late last year at the Bonakye checkpoint.
The disclosure was contained in a press release dated February 25, 2026, and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit, Oti Region.
According to the statement, the Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09 was stopped on December 29, 2025, while heading toward Kpassa after intelligence suggested it was transporting illegal goods.
Upon interception, the driver and one other occupant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle with the ignition key.
Police secured the truck and later sought a court order to open and inspect its contents. On February 24, 2026, the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, granted the order for the vehicle to be opened.
The truck was subsequently opened at Nkwanta in the presence of representatives from the Police, Military, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan, and members of the media.
A thorough search revealed three hundred and twenty cartons of bottled mineral water concealing ninety-one bales of suspected cannabis. The police indicated that the bales contained a total of 7,173 slabs of the compressed substance.
The estimated street value of the seized consignment exceeds GHS1.4 million, according to the statement.
“The exhibits have been retained as investigations proceed,” DSP John Nchor stated, adding that efforts are ongoing to track down the driver and the other occupant who fled the scene.
The Oti Regional Police Command assured the public of its continued commitment to combating the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs in the region.
It further encouraged members of the public to volunteer credible information that could assist security agencies in crime prevention and detection as investigations into the case continue.
