Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title on Saturday night, overcoming Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout after a fiercely contested 1-1 draw following extra time in Budapest.
The victory sparked jubilant scenes among PSG players and supporters as the French champions once again lifted European football’s most prestigious club trophy after surviving one of the toughest tests of their campaign.
Arsenal stunned their opponents with an early breakthrough when Kai Havertz struck in the sixth minute, giving the Gunners the perfect start and raising hopes of a historic first Champions League triumph.
The Premier League side maintained their advantage for much of the first half, frustrating PSG’s attacking stars and limiting clear-cut chances.
However, the French club emerged from the break with renewed intensity and eventually found a way back into the contest when Ousmane Dembélé calmly converted a penalty to restore parity.
Both sides created opportunities to win the match in normal time, but neither could find the decisive goal as the final moved into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced moments of high drama, with Arsenal pressing for a winner and PSG threatening on the counterattack, yet the deadlock remained unbroken. With the scores still level, the destination of the trophy was left to penalties.
PSG proved flawless from the spot, converting their kicks with confidence under immense pressure. Arsenal, meanwhile, failed to match that precision, allowing the French champions to seize the advantage and secure victory.
“This is a special group of players,” he said. “We fought together, suffered together and achieved something incredible together. Winning the Champions League again is an unforgettable feeling.”
The result cements PSG’s status as one of Europe’s dominant forces and marks another landmark achievement under Luis Enrique’s leadership.
For Arsenal, the defeat ends a remarkable European journey in heartbreaking fashion. Despite falling short in the final, the London club’s run to the showpiece match signalled its return to the highest level of continental football.
The triumph also adds another historic chapter to the club’s continental success, as they continue to establish themselves as a dominant force in the UEFA Champions League.
