Research, innovation key to Ghana’s sustainable development – Dr. Apaak

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has noted that research and innovation are key to Ghana’s sustainable development.
Speaking at the 8th International Conference on Applied Sciences and Technology (ICAST 2025), Dr. Apaak said, “Research is not just about publication; it is about impact.” He challenged researchers and scholars to produce knowledge that solves problems, informs policy, and improves livelihoods.
The conference, themed “Promoting Research, Innovation and Industrial Partnership for Sustainable Development,” brought together experts from across the globe to discuss the role of higher education institutions in driving national development.
Dr. Apaak noted that the Government of Ghana, under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has initiated several interventions aimed at transforming the education system and positioning research institutions as drivers of national development.
One such initiative is the allocation of 50 million Ghana Cedis to the Ghana National Research Fund to deepen research and innovation across the country. Dr. Apaak stated, “The objective is to gradually increase this fund and ensure equitable, transparent, and merit-based disbursement to support impactful research across all disciplines and also strengthen linkages between academia and industry.”
The Deputy Minister emphasized the need for universities to serve as intellectual bridges between theory and practice, producing not only degree holders but problem solvers and innovators.
He urged participants to take full advantage of the conference to form new collaborations, identify academic partners, and inspire students.
“To the young people among us, students, innovators, and emerging researchers, I say this: you are the future of this nation. You must rise above limitations and channel your creativity towards finding solutions to the challenges we face today.
“Whether in agriculture, engineering, health, or education, your ideas matter. The Government stands ready to support you through funding, mentorship, and policy frameworks that reward innovation and excellence.”
