SM-Ghana invokes Nkrumah as it declares solidarity with Cuba amid US blockade

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) has invoked Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah while declaring solidarity with Cuba over the country’s worsening energy crisis.
In a statement issued on May 28, the group linked Cuba’s struggle under the United States blockade to the broader fight against imperialism and oppression championed by Ghana’s first President.
“The Socialist Movement of Ghana draws inspiration from the revolutionary Pan-Africanism of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who taught that the freedom of Ghana is inseparable from the liberation of all oppressed peoples,” the statement said.
SMG added that Nkrumah’s principles demanded support for Cuba during what it described as a difficult and unjust period for the Caribbean nation.
“Today, that principle demands that we stand resolutely with Cuba. The suffering of the Cuban people is not isolated from us. Their struggle against imperialism is part of the global struggle for justice, sovereignty, and dignity,” the group stated.
Cuba is currently battling a deepening energy crisis after officials confirmed the country had exhausted its diesel and fuel oil reserves. Millions of Cubans are experiencing prolonged daily blackouts, with electricity in some areas limited to only one or two hours a day.
The shortages have disrupted essential services, forcing many residents to rely on charcoal and firewood for cooking while hospitals and clinics struggle to operate effectively.
Cuban authorities have blamed the crisis on tighter United States sanctions and restrictions targeting foreign vessels transporting fuel to the island. Aging thermoelectric plants and limited access to spare parts have also worsened the situation.
The Socialist Movement of Ghana accused the United States of imposing policies that had crippled Cuba’s economy and energy sector for decades.
“The United States blockade maintained for more than six decades has systematically restricted Cuba’s access to fuel, energy infrastructure, financing, spare parts, and international trade,” the statement noted.
The group further praised Cuba’s historic role in supporting liberation struggles across Africa, particularly in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and Guinea-Bissau.
“We join the majority of nations across the world in demanding the immediate and unconditional lifting of the United States blockade against Cuba,” SMG added.
