Suame Interchange: Amoakohene confirms settlement of contractor debts

Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, says the government has cleared all arrears owed to contractors on the stalled Suame Interchange project, paving the way for work to resume.

The Ashanti Regional Minister explained that the payments cover outstanding certificates dating from 2024 through to 2026, which had contributed to the prolonged halt in construction.

Responding to recent protests by traders and artisans at Suame Magazine over dust and delays, Dr. Amoakohene said he had received official communication confirming the development.

“I’m here to announce to you that today I have received information from the transport ministry that payments have been made to the contractor on Suame Interchange and work will resume on the Interchange next week,” he stated.

The project, a major infrastructure initiative in Kumasi, has faced mounting public frustration since work stalled in 2024, disrupting businesses and daily movement in the area.

Further confirmation came from Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza, who indicated that contractors are expected to fully return to site.

In a post on X, he said, “Government cleared the outstanding debt owed to the contractors based on certificates raised and not paid for since 2024,” adding that they will “FULLY mobilise back to site next week to complete the project.”

Mr. Agbodza also appealed for calm among affected residents and traders, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the delays.

Beyond the interchange, Dr. Amoakohene highlighted ongoing road projects across the region.

He noted that construction is progressing on the Mankoradze Road, Bekwai–Santasi Road, and the Agogo–Maame Krobo road as part of broader government efforts to improve transportation.

“Work is ongoing and we are also ensuring that solid concrete works that need to be done are also being done,” he said, assuring residents of durable, high-quality road infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Roads and Highways Ministry has announced an additional GH¢3 billion allocation toward the revised three-tier design of the Suame Interchange, underscoring the government’s commitment to completing one of Kumasi’s most critical road projects.
