Supreme court reinstates Nyindam as Kpandai MP

Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, has welcomed a Supreme Court ruling that overturned a Tamale High Court order directing a rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency.

According to 3news, a unanimous decision delivered on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the apex court quashed the High Court’s ruling and reinstated Nyindam as the duly elected MP for Kpandai.

The legal dispute arose after the NDC parliamentary candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, filed an election petition challenging Nyindam’s victory. The petition was upheld by the Tamale High Court, which subsequently annulled the election and ordered a rerun.

However, Nyindam’s legal team escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing that the High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case because the petition was filed outside the constitutionally mandated 21-day period.

Speaking to journalists after the ruling, Nyindam expressed gratitude to the court, describing the decision as a victory for democracy.

“The Supreme Court has affirmed the will of the people, and I am most grateful,” he said.

He also thanked the panel of Supreme Court judges, his lawyers, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and residents of Kpandai for standing by him throughout the legal battle.

“I want to thank the party from the head to the bottom for the support they have given me, as well as the people of Kpandai,” he noted.

Nyindam further acknowledged the support of former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, adding, “By the will of God, he will serve this great nation once again.”

At the Supreme Court hearing on January 13, lead counsel for Nyindam, Gary Nimako, argued that the election results were gazetted on December 24, making the filing of the petition on January 25, 2025, legally out of time.

He maintained that the High Court judge committed a jurisdictional error by entertaining the petition and that all subsequent orders flowing from the case were null and void.

The Supreme Court upheld these arguments, bringing the prolonged legal contest to an end and restoring Nyindam’s mandate as Kpandai MP.
