Suspended public sector salaries to be reinstated after verification – CAGD

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has confirmed that more than 2,000 public sector workers, whose salaries were temporarily stopped, will have their pay reinstated after completing verification with the Ghana Audit Service (GAS).
The Department explained that the salary suspension followed a recommendation from the Auditor-General and was conducted under the Public Financial Management (PFM) laws. CAGD said the measure is part of efforts to safeguard payroll integrity and ensure public sector payments are transparent, accountable, and accurate.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, February 2, 2026, Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei said the affected staff had not participated in a nationwide headcount exercise carried out in 2025. “The Auditor-General initially reported that around 6,000 employees had missed the exercise, and therefore their salaries could not be processed. After reviewing our records internally, we discovered that only about 2,000 employees were still affected, as the remaining cases had been resolved,” he explained.
Agyei added that letters had been sent to the institutions of the affected staff, instructing them to report to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. “Once the Auditor-General completes the verification process and formally notifies us, their salaries will be reactivated immediately,” he said.
The suspension follows CAGD’s earlier announcement that January 2026 salaries would not be paid to 2,563 staff who failed to comply with the mandatory verification exercise. While salaries for other eligible public sector workers have been successfully processed, those who missed the exercise did not receive payment, the Department noted.
CAGD said the temporary stoppage is part of measures to strengthen the integrity of the payroll and prevent irregularities in public sector compensation. The Department urged all affected staff to contact the Ghana Audit Service without delay and complete the required verification to facilitate the prompt reinstatement of their salaries.
Kwasi Agyei reiterated that the Department remains committed to timely and accurate payroll administration. He assured the public that the suspension was purely administrative and that once verification is complete, payments will be restored in full.
