Tension at GACL over return of former NPP MCE to post

There are seeming agitations and tension at the Ghana Airport Company.
The development at the company is a result of a number of management decisions which the workers believe are inimical to the progress of the organization.
Managing Director for GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare according to some workers has elevated some persons engaged within 3 months to top management positions without following due process owing to their affiliation to the NPP. They for instance cite some appointments to the Commercial Department which is the main driver of non-aeronautical revenue; managing key revenue contracts and landed properties of the company.

Another development that has fueled the agitations at the Ghana Airport Company is the return to post of immediate past MCE for Tema East Felicia Eden Attipoe who left the company to assume the political appointment. According to the workers, the former MCE whom until her appointment was the NPP Tema East Women Organizer took leave without pay but kept receiving salaries. Felicia Edem Attipoe has however been re-engaged by the new MD following the loss of the NPP at the 2024 polls despite an earlier letter interdicting her according to the aggrieved staff.
A section of the workers are demanding the MD sets up a committee to investigate the double salary claims against the staff despite her refunding the amount received after the NPP exited power.
The workers are also pointing to the capture of some key positions by politically exposed persons taking decisions which they believe are not in the interest of the company. According to them the Director for Commercial Services, Gideon Mahama Grumah was special aide to the late Aviation Minister, Kofi Addah and NPP parliamentary aspirant for Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency in the 2024 elections.

The aggrieved workers are also accusing the MD of undertaking massive promotion of NPP executives and staffs to senior management levels without regard to due process in accordance with the collective agreement. The beneficiaries included NPP Greater Accra Regional vice chairman, Eric Yeboah, and eighteen others including all regional Airport managers and Directors.
The aggrieved workers are wondering why the new Mahama administration is keeping Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare as MD.
Again, some staff members have vowed to reject any appointment of a deputy Managing Director for the company since that position is alien to the companny.
According to them the organizational structure of the Ghana Airport Company does not make room for any deputy MD.
They warn any attempt to introduce positions that do not exist per the organizational structure would result in a never ending rancor between government and workers Union.
