Three killed, 17 rescued in fatal crash on Kpeve–Asikuma road

Three people have been confirmed dead, while 17 others were rescued after a devastating road accident at Woadze near Kpeve along the Kpeve–Asikuma highway in the Volta Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, May 22, involving a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C, which was reportedly travelling from Abotuase in the Volta Region to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Peki Fire Station received a distress call at about 9:58 a.m. and quickly dispatched a rescue team to the scene to assist passengers trapped in the wreckage.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the vehicle severely damaged, with several occupants trapped inside after the crash.

The commercial vehicle was carrying a total of 20 passengers, made up of 11 men, five women, and four children at the time of the accident.

Fire officers immediately began rescue operations and successfully extricated 17 victims from the mangled vehicle, including four children and several adults who sustained various degrees of injuries.

Sadly, three adults — two men and one woman — lost their lives in the accident before rescuers could save them.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Kpando Divisional Command also arrived at the scene to support traffic control, rescue efforts, and preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash.

Officials from the Ghana Ambulance Service stationed at Afadjato and Juapong provided emergency medical assistance to the injured victims before transporting them to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were also conveyed to the hospital morgue pending identification processes and further investigations.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of the accident, but investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the increasing number of accidents on major highways across the country.

Meanwhile, the injured passengers are reportedly receiving medical care as investigations continue.
