Two people swept away by floodwaters on Kasoa–Domeabra Road

Two people, including a child, are reported to have been swept away by floodwaters on the Kasoa–Domeabra road after heavy rains caused River Agyei to overflow its banks.
The incident occurred near Nurses Quarters Junction in the Ga South Municipality, where rising floodwaters submerged sections of the road and disrupted both vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were attempting to cross the flooded stretch when they were overpowered by the strong current.
Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive, Seth Serwonoo Banini, said information available to his office suggests that the child was being carried across the flooded area before being swept away.
According to him, an adult who attempted to rescue the child was also caught in the raging waters.
“The child was being carried by the floodwaters, and in an attempt by the adult to help, both were also swept away,” he told Adom News.
Mr. Banini made the disclosure while assisting authorities to manage traffic and restore movement on the affected road following the flooding.
The heavy downpour led to the overflow of River Agyei, causing significant flooding along portions of the Kasoa–Domeabra road and leaving many commuters stranded.
Authorities were forced to intervene as transport activities on the stretch were disrupted by the rising water levels.
The Municipal Chief Executive also sought to correct reports suggesting that the incident occurred within the Kasoa municipality.
“I want to clarify that the incident did not occur in Kasoa. It happened within the Ga South Municipality,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, disaster management officials have renewed calls for residents to exercise caution during the rainy season.
Awutu Senya East Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Nash Nyandey, urged people living close to rivers, streams and drainage channels to remain vigilant, especially as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
He said forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency indicate that additional rains are likely and warned residents against taking unnecessary risks during flooding.
Mr. Nyandey also appealed to the public to desist from dumping refuse into drains, describing the practice as one of the major causes of flooding in many communities.
“People should desist from dumping refuse into drains during rainfall. It contributes significantly to flooding,” he stated.
The incident adds to mounting concerns over the increasing threat of flooding, which has affected lives and property in several communities in recent times.
