“Unacceptable!” Germany condemns attack on Ghanaian troops in Lebanon

Germany has condemned the missile strike on Ghanaian peacekeepers in Lebanon, describing the attack on a United Nations base as unacceptable.
The condemnation followed Ghana’s formal protest to the United Nations over the missile attack on its troops serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The protest was announced in a statement signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The strike hit the Ghana Battalion Headquarters in southern Lebanon on March 6, leaving two Ghanaian soldiers critically injured while another personnel was traumatised.
Reacting to the development, Germany’s Foreign Office issued a strong condemnation in a social media post on Saturday.
“Targeting UN peacekeepers is unacceptable. We clearly condemn the strike on a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon that has left several Ghanaian peacekeepers wounded,” the German Foreign Office stated.
It also urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect the protection accorded to peacekeepers under international law.
“We urge all actors to ensure the safety and security of UN peacekeepers at all times,” the statement added.
Earlier, the Government of Ghana confirmed that it had formally written to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“The Government of Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel deployed in the service of international peace and security,” the statement from the Foreign Ministry said.
The government strongly condemned the strike and insisted that those responsible must be identified and held accountable.
According to the Ministry, the attack constitutes a grave violation of international law and undermines the protections afforded to peacekeeping personnel serving under the United Nations.
Ghana also urged the UN to take all necessary measures to guarantee the safety and security of Ghanaian troops and other personnel deployed under the UN mission.
The ministry noted that peacekeepers often operate in volatile environments while contributing to global stability and conflict resolution.
“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the statement said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their loved ones.”
Despite the incident, Ghana indicated it remains committed to UN peacekeeping operations and will continue to work with the United Nations as investigations into the attack progress.
