Ghana demands UN probes attack on troops in Lebanon

Ghana has lodged a formal protest to the United Nations following a missile attack on Ghanaian peacekeepers serving under the UN mission in Lebanon.
The protest was contained in a statement signed by Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who announced that the government had formally written to the UN demanding investigations into the attack.
The strike targeted the Ghana Battalion Headquarters serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon on March 6, 2026.
Two Ghanaian soldiers were critically injured after a missile hit the base, while another personnel was left traumatised by the incident.
In the statement, the Government of Ghana said it had formally addressed a protest to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, calling for a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“The Government of Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel deployed in the service of international peace and security,” the statement said.
Ghana strongly condemned the attack and insisted that those responsible must be identified and held accountable.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the assault constitutes a grave violation of international law and undermines the protections afforded to peacekeeping personnel operating under the United Nations.
The government further urged the United Nations to take all necessary measures to guarantee the safety and security of Ghanaian peacekeepers and other personnel serving under the UN mission.
The Foreign Ministry stressed that the men and women deployed in UN peacekeeping operations continue to serve under dangerous conditions and make daily sacrifices in pursuit of international peace and stability.
“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the ministry said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their loved ones.”
The government also emphasised that Ghana remains firmly committed to United Nations peacekeeping operations despite the attack.
It added that the safety and protection of peacekeeping personnel must remain a top priority in the global effort to maintain international peace and security.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to monitor developments closely and remain engaged with the United Nations as investigations into the incident proceed.
