Use your opportunity to bring others up – Jane Opoku-Agyemang to Women Caucus

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has urged the Women’s Caucus to leverage their positions as parliamentarians to drive positive change and uplift others.
Speaking during a meeting with the caucus on Friday, June 27, she pledged to engage in further discussions with the Caucus to shape policies that will foster national development and promote gender equality.
“For me, the important point is that now that we are here, what will we do with the opportunity? It cannot be just for us. It cannot be unto us as individuals. It can be unto us as how we use that opportunity to bring others up,” she said.
In response, the Women’s Caucus in Parliament urged the Vice President to facilitate the effective enforcement of the Affirmative Action Law.
The law, passed in 2024, aims to achieve a minimum of 30% representation of women in political appointments by 2026 and provide equal opportunities for them. It also calls on the private sector to enforce gender-friendly policies.
Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei emphasised the Women’s Caucus’s commitment to supporting her in delivering her mandate.
“It is important that the implementation of the law is very crucial and it is important that as your role as the mother of this house, we are all your children and we are going to support you to ensure that your delivery as the Vice President will be one that is exceptional and unprecedented,” she said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Majority Chief Whip Comfort Doyoe urged the Vice President to support President John Dramani Mahama in governing the country.
She noted that the Vice President’s role serves as an inspiration for young women to break through barriers and achieve their goals.
Doyoe also commended the Vice President’s motherly counsel, which, according to her, has had a positive impact on the country’s governance.
“As a mother, you can enrich the presidency and advance our shared national aspiration. Support His Excellency with your insights and motherly advice,” she said.
