Vehicle bursts into flames on Ablekuma-Curve

The incident brought traffic to a halt and shocked onlookers.
A private vehicle suddenly burst into flames on the Ablekuma-Curve on Saturday, creating panic among motorists and residents.
The fire, which started when the saloon car began emitting smoke from its engine compartment, quickly spread and engulfed the entire vehicle.
The Ablekuma-Curve incident forced the driver and passengers to escape for their lives as the blaze intensified. Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene shortly after and managed to contain the flames with hoses, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
According to the GNFS, no casualties were recorded in the Ablekuma-Curve fire, although the vehicle was completely destroyed. The incident, however, caused heavy traffic congestion in the area as other motorists diverted to alternative routes while onlookers gathered to watch.
Fire officers have since used the incident as a reminder to drivers to regularly service their vehicles and carry out proper safety checks to prevent such dangerous occurrences. The burnt car was later towed from the road, restoring normal traffic flow along the Ablekuma stretch.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the Accra Timber Market fire.
The fire destroyed shops and wooden structures in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025.
According to the GNFS, preliminary intelligence gathered during the firefighting operations revealed that the Accra Timber Market fire was allegedly caused by a man who set rubbish ablaze and left it unattended, leading to the massive destruction. The suspect was later picked up by police following swift action based on the information provided.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, explained that plainclothed officers deployed during the firefighting operations linked the blaze to the arrested suspect. He said the Accra Timber Market fire was traced to the unattended rubbish fire, which spread rapidly through shops stocked with timber and hardware.
“The good thing is that this morning, the Police Commander came to report to the Chief Fire Officer — I was around — that they have been able to apprehend the gentleman and currently, as we speak, the alleged suspect is now in police custody at James Town Police Station,” ACFO II Nisawu stated.
