We have majority, but we still need more numbers – Bernard Baidoo
The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Baidoo, says that despite his party holding the majority in Parliament, there is still a pressing need to strengthen their numbers.
He believes this will ensure smoother decision-making and enhance government efficiency.
In an interview with Joy News TV which was keenly followed by Today.com.gh, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Mr. Baidoo explained that while the Majority Caucus enjoys a slight numerical advantage, the margin is too narrow to guarantee stability in the House. According to him, the current situation often leaves the leadership struggling to maintain attendance and coordination during crucial debates and votes.
“We have the majority, but we still need more numbers,” he emphasized. “Currently, we are 185 in Parliament, but that is not enough. There are moments when some members are absent or have other commitments, and that affects how decisions are taken. So even though we have the majority on paper, practically, we still need more.”
Mr. Baidoo noted that the present parliamentary composition is one of the most balanced in Ghana’s recent political history. He observed that while the dynamic promotes dialogue and bipartisanship, it can also slow down legislative processes that require swift action.
He stressed that having a more comfortable majority would allow government to focus on policy implementation rather than spending time ensuring full attendance for every vote. “It’s not about silencing the opposition,” he said. “It’s about making sure the business of the people moves without unnecessary obstacles.”
The Akwatia MP further urged his colleagues to prioritize participation in parliamentary business, emphasizing that every vote and contribution counts. “Sometimes, even one voice or one vote can make a difference,” he remarked.
He also commended members from both sides of the House for maintaining a cordial working relationship despite political differences. “We may debate fiercely on the floor, but outside Parliament, there is mutual respect,” he said. “We understand that at the end of the day, we are all working for Ghana.”
