‘You committed the most egregious sin against democracy’ – Franklin Cudjoe fires NPP over protest 

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned “Democracy under attack” protest.

He accused the NPP of failing to defend democratic principles during its tenure.

The Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s planned protest, questioning the party’s decision to raise concerns about democracy while, according to him, failing to account for actions taken during its time in government.

Commenting on the NPP’s planned demonstration on his Facebook page, Mr Cudjoe argued that the NPP must first acknowledge what he described as its own “devious and treacherous scheme” that affected thousands of Ghanaians in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi (SALL) areas.

He accused the party of remaining silent when residents of the affected communities lost parliamentary representation following the creation of the Oti Region, a situation he said left about 80,000 citizens “stateless, hungry, wretched and poor” for four years.

“You committed the most egregious sin against democracy, and you haven’t even apologised! Democracy will continue to attack you until you apologise,” Mr Cudjoe stated.

The IMANI Africa founder maintained that democracy should not only be defended when political parties are in opposition but must also be protected through decisions taken while in government.

Mr Cudjoe also criticised the economic management of the former NPP administration, particularly policies introduced during Ghana’s economic crisis, which he said affected the financial security of millions of citizens.

He accused the party’s economic management team of using representative democracy to implement measures that negatively affected the savings and investments of Ghanaians, including pensioners, students and other vulnerable groups.

According to him, the economic difficulties experienced by many citizens were a result of decisions that had long-lasting consequences on their livelihoods.

He further expressed concern about the environmental impact of the planned demonstration, arguing that large gatherings often leave behind waste, especially plastic materials, on the streets.

Mr Cudjoe said he had been forced to reschedule a planned national conversation on plastic waste management scheduled for August 6 because media coverage would focus on the NPP demonstration.

The comments from the IMANI Africa president have intensified the debate surrounding the planned protest, with the discussion moving beyond the demonstration itself to broader issues of accountability, governance and the responsibility of political parties in protecting democratic values.

As the NPP prepares for its action, Mr Cudjoe’s remarks have added pressure on the party to respond to accusations about its record on democratic governance and its handling of national issues while in power.
