Your call for GETFund supporting private universities insincere – Dr. Apaak to Kyei Mensah-Bonsu

The deputy ranking member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak has stated that the call by the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu for the government to amend the GETFund laws to support private universities is insincere.
This comes on the back of the Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, calling on the government to amend the GETfund law to support private Universities in Ghana.
He made this statement during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi.
“In confronting the imperatives of Article 25 Clause 2, with the necessary amendment and leverage the fair playing field for Private universities in pursuant of Article 38 clauses 3 to play the full role in providing full access to all Ghanaian citizens to universities or equivalent institution will give us the opportunity to kill four birds with one stone”.
“The ultimate in achieving this is by amending the constitution on account of the relevant amendment especially article 25 clause 2, which talks about the GETFund support,” Mr. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu stated.
Commenting on the Majority Leader’s call in a tweet, the Builsa South lawmaker disclosed that the governing New Patriotic Party were the very persons who capped the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
He further questioned why the Majority should make such a call after the NPP administration has collateralized and made the GETFund bankrupt.
“The GETFUND your NPP gov’t has capped, collateralized and bankrupted? The GETFUND that is struggling to meet its basic obligations? If you want GETFUND to do more, support the Private bill to decap it. If not, we can only say your call is insincere.
“In fact, the majority leader is the same man who led the charge to get a bill to cap statutory funds, including GETFUND passed in 2018. We vehemently opposed the bill, but he whipped his side in line to pass it,” Dr. Apaak stated.
He continued: “Currently, a Private Members’ bill sponsored by the Chair and Ranking of the Education Committee to decap GETFUND is held up at the Finance Committee because the leadership of the NPP in Parliament and the government are opposed to our efforts to decap GETFUND.”
In a related development, The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has disclosed that the Scholarship Secretariat seems to be the most corrupt government agency in recent times.
This follows complaints from the section of Ghanaians on the activities of the scholarship secretariat on both social media and traditional media.
In a twee the Builsa South lawmaker indicated that anyone with the information on the activities at the secretariat can relay them to him since he has filed a question at the scholarships.
“I am getting lots of complaints and information to the effect that the scholarships are sold, in most cases, to persons who don’t qualify for any academic work. Those who truly merit scholarships must pay between 80 – 100k to get their scholarship applications processed.
“Though I’ve filed a question on complaints about scholarships, I urge anyone who has information on the dubious activities going on at the scholarship secretariat to contact me. I guarantee that I will keep the identities of those willing to share information to help dismantle the cabal profiting from the despicable deals at the secretariat,” the Builsa South MP stated.
He continued: “The scholarship secretariat seems to have become one of the most corrupt agencies in Ghana today.”
