Ambulance involved in accident over brake failure at Afosu

A National Ambulance Service vehicle from Nkawkaw was involved in a serious accident at Afosu in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
The crash reportedly occurred after the ambulance’s brakes failed while it was in motion, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.
According to a statement from the Eastern Regional Public Relations Office of the Ghana National Fire Service, the New Abirem Municipal Fire Station received a distress call at about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025. Within two minutes, a team of seven firefighters led by Leading Fireman (LFM) Tenkorang Ofori Prince was deployed to the scene to assist with rescue operations.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the ambulance somersaulted several times before finally landing on its side. Four people were on board the vehicle at the time of the crash. Fortunately, all four victims were rescued alive and immediately transported to the New Abirem Government Hospital for medical attention.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to secure the area and prevent further hazards. They cleaned blood stains from the road and retrieved vital medical equipment from the damaged ambulance. Items recovered included a ventilator, cardiac monitor, chest compression device, fire extinguisher, stethoscope, and a telephone.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service also arrived at the scene to manage traffic and ensure public safety while investigations into the incident continued. The quick response by both the Fire Service and Police helped maintain order and prevent additional accidents along the busy stretch.
Meanwhile, a few days ago, a tragic accident near Yamoransa on the Cape Coast, Accra highway claimed five lives and left 12 others injured, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The crash occurred on Monday, September 15, 2025, at Wakrom Junction, where a DAF truck loaded with 700 bags of rice collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle. The GNFS Rescue Team from the Central Regional Headquarters arrived at the scene at 2:59 p.m., minutes after receiving a distress call.
“Upon arrival, our team commenced swift rescue operations and managed to extricate five victims from the wreckage,” the GNFS statement confirmed. “Sadly, four of them were pronounced dead at the hospital, while one is critically injured and receiving treatment.”
The Service further revealed that 12 passengers had been rushed to the hospital before their team arrived. Unfortunately, one of those passengers later died, raising the confirmed death toll to five.
In all, the accident resulted in 17 casualties, five confirmed dead and 12 others injured. The driver and mate of the DAF truck, however, escaped unhurt.
The GNFS also noted that the accident caused heavy traffic on the busy Cape Coast–Accra highway as emergency responders worked to save lives and clear the road. “We urge motorists to exercise extreme caution while driving, especially along accident-prone stretches like Yamoransa,” the statement added.
