Bawumia pledges annual NPP constituency meetings to boost grassroots participation

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to make grassroots participation a central feature of his presidency by holding annual constituency meetings across the country to listen to the concerns of citizens and party members.
He said the initiative would ensure that governance remains people-centred, transparent, and responsive to local needs.
Dr. Bawumia made the commitment on the first day of his tour of the Bono Region, where he visited the Banda, Tain, and Wenchi constituencies as part of his nationwide engagement with NPP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.
Addressing delegates, Dr. Bawumia said his goal as President would be to bring governance closer to the people through direct and consistent engagement with the grassroots.
“If I am elected President, I will make time to regularly engage with the party’s grassroots,” he said. “Just as former President Kufuor did, I will dedicate at least one day each year to meet directly with members at the constituency level through town-hall-style meetings.”
He explained that the proposed annual meetings would provide a unique opportunity for ordinary citizens and party members to express their views, share challenges, and make suggestions on national issues.
“These interactions will allow me to listen to your concerns firsthand and work on them. This is how we will stay connected, and I will ensure that as President, your voices are heard and your issues are addressed,” Dr. Bawumia assured.
He emphasized that inclusive governance remains vital to national development, adding that sustained engagement with citizens would help bridge the gap between government and the governed.
“Our development as a nation depends on how well we listen to our people. When government stays connected to the grassroots, progress becomes meaningful and sustainable,” he added.
Although opinion polls include a recent one released by Global InfoAnalytics have the former vice-president in a commanding leading, he has come under intense attacks from the other contenders.
The January 2026 presidential primaries of the opposition NPP is set to feature former Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The aspirants have repeatedly trade barbs over the real reasons for the party’s historic defeat last year. Dr. Acheampong and Mr. Agyapong have repeatedly warned that giving Dr. Bawumia a second opportunity to lead the party will be damaging to the party’s 2028 electoral fortunes.
